My cats do the same with the carrier in my last home. I sometimes kept the carrier assembled and sitting under the dining room table and my female cat would sneak in there and take her daytime naps in the carrier. Forget it on a vet day though.

As much as I like Ambercat I have to say what a PIA he is. Hopefully he will grow out of his destructive behaviors. My orange cat doesn't do anything like Ambercat does. He was one or two years old when I adopted him and is now 7 or 8 years old. He never did cause any trouble.
